A Four-Century Classical Vocal Tradition

The Sham Chaurasi Gharana is one of the oldest surviving traditions of classical vocal music on the subcontinent.

For more than four hundred years, the teachings have been transmitted through direct teacher-disciple lineage, preserving musical depth, discipline, and expressive restraint.

This is a living tradition—shaped by time, refined through practice, and sustained through generations.

The Origins of the Sham Chaurasi Gharana

The Sham Chaurasi Gharana is one of the most distinguished classical vocal traditions of the region.

The lineage traces its beginnings to the sixteenth century, when two brothers with exceptional musical gifts were recognized by the saint Syed Feel Ali Sarmast.

Under his guidance, and later through advanced study with Swami Haridas, their artistry matured into a rare mastery that brought them before Emperor Akbar’s court.

According to tradition, their performance lasted an entire day and encompassed the rāgas known at the time. In recognition of this achievement, they were invited to join the royal court, and the name Sham Chaurasi was established — a name that continues to carry both origin and legacy.

From this moment, the lineage took shape.

The Sham Chaurasi Gharana began in the Dhrupad tradition and formed a clear, distinct style. It later embraced khayal, thumri, dadra, and kafi, while keeping the music balanced and guided.

Ustad Salamat Ali Khan

Ustad Salamat Ali Khan is one of the most important figures in the history of the Sham Chaurasi Gharana. Known for his deep understanding of rāga, rhythm, and expression, he helped shape the modern style of the tradition through both performance and teaching. His firm approach to classical form kept the lineage clear and strong, even as the music continued to grow and develop over time.

The Living Lineage
Today, the tradition continues through Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan, who carries forward the music of the Sham Chaurasi Gharana through his singing and teaching.

Through his work with students, he passes on the gharana’s values — clear tone, careful structure, and honest expression — inviting them into a path that asks for patience, discipline, and steady study over time.
